Marc Gossé: This meeting is an opportunity to help reinforce sustainable development in urbanism in Africa and to improve overall quality in contemporary architecture. It is a trigger to launch exchanges and build perspectives of networks, collaborations projects “in Africa by and for Africans”.
The long-term goals are threefold:
To strengthen and develop the network thanks to a stronger inter-universitary
collaboration.
To organize yearly seminars/conferences on certain relevant themes such as technology, urban planning and urban crisis.
To produce a travelling exhibition of great contemporary African architecture and an award so that there is a better diffusion of contemporary production in architecture.

Evening: Francis KERE lecture« 3 projets: construire avec le climat et les resources locales » CIVA, Brussels
Francis Kéré is a practising Berlin-based architect who recently won an Aga Khan award (2005) for the project he managed in his Burkina Faso native village: Pano. At odds with an academic discourse or an unreachable jargon, his lecture simply attempted to explain with easy words how he succeeded to build sustainable housing along with climate, local resources and people from his village. Morning: Constitution of four different workgroups with a reporter for each group
The reporter clearly highlighted the need to improve the dissemination and sharing of information regarding African architecture. He mentioned the necessity of building a website that would be a venue for resources pulled together for knowledge-sharing among architects. The next step being: who will take responsibility for creating and maintaining the website?
2. Networking & Research : Laban Shihembetsa (reporter) Han Verschure / Livin Mosha / El Montacir Bensaid / Lawrence Esho
The reporter of this workgroup insisted on the importance of capacity building and academic careers upgrading through mobility and exchange.Hence the need to form a committee to prepare a proposal for funding. The creation of a database is also needed in order to improve the transparence in researches of common interest and in Universities overlapping programmes.
3. International Conference: Daan Van Tassel (reporter) Abdel Benabdeljalil / Malick Gaye / Nicholas Clarke / Antoni Folkers / Fakambi Bankole
This workgroup thought over the organization of an international conference that would take place every two years with an alternance of the hosting place. This conference will be a great opportunity of networking and debating on the future cities. It will also bring closer cooperation and partnerships between different participants.Once again, a strategy for fundraising should be put in motion.
4. Award + Exhibition: Hannah Leroux (reporter) Jean-Pierre Maïssa / Alphonce Kyessi / Anselmo Cani / Iain Low / Antoni Folkers / Nicholas Clarke / Bjorn Maes
The team reflected upon the organization of a joint award-exhibition-publication project in the field of contemporary African architecture. In terms of concrete steps, each participant to the workshop was assigned a specific task. Once again the need for a database and funding applications appeared as recurring matters.
Conclusion:
First and foremost, a database and website need to be created as a platform in order to support the project and to diffuse the information. For that concern, one coordinator is needed to gather all the data and constantly update the database. Marc Gossé proposed to call the network : “African Architects Network” (AANet)
Second, there must be someone in charge of formulating a funding application for the exhibition/award/publication which will happen in parallel to the next international conference in Pretoria, April 2009.
Some workgroups focused on the main four themes evoked previously are in charge of thinking over the different aspects and proposing something each month in regard of 2009. It has been decided that they are eventually the following:
1.Networking Elleh Nnamdi / Kouadio NdaNguessan / George Intsiful / Marc Gossé 2.Research Han Verschure / Laban Shihembetsa / Livin Mosha / El Montacir Bensaïd / Lawrence Esho 3.International Conference Abdel Benabdeljalil / Malick Gaye / Nicholas Clarke / Antoni Folkers / Fakambi Bankole 4.Award + Exhibition Jean-Pierre Maïssa / Alphonce Kyessi / Anselmo Cani / Bjorn Maes / Hannah Leroux
